We cannot recommend Bearded Heron Safaris enough

My high regard for Bearded Heron Safaris began long before our trip. Working with Tina on our plans and organizing the trip was a breeze thanks to her. Then, our long-awaited trip began and I have only the highest praise. From the first handshake with Neil, we knew this would be an experience of a lifetime. Together the team did everything they could to make our dreams come true. Alistair filled our stomachs with the most amazing bush meals and Neil filled our brains and senses with his knowledge, love and passion for the Kruger. It's one thing to have a game drive where the driver and tracker tell you about what you are seeing. It's another thing to be on a game drive where your guide helps you think like the animals, to analyze the situation, to appreciate what the shake of a lion's mane means, and to immerse yourself in the real time environmental, ecological and conservation issues.\r\n\r\nWe cannot recommend Bearded Heron Safaris enough. 5 stars +++++++

..an extremely well-run operation

From start to finish, Bearded Heron Safaris was an extremely well-run operation. This being our first safari, there were many questions upfront and Tina was extremely patient in answering all of them. Tina and Neil were very accommodating in modifying their tour packages to fit our schedule and our budget.\r\n\r\nThe logistics were very organized and thoughtful. The pick-up and drop-off in Johannesburg were prompt, courteous, and safe. All accommodations were very scenic, comfortable, and quite private. The meals were varied, tasty, and always with generous portions. Everything was always ready in the morning for a prompt departure from camp as soon as the gates opened -- prime time to see predators.\r\n\r\nBut more remarkable than the coordination was the unbridled passion that Neil Heron has for Kruger Park and its inhabitants. He really means it when he says the purpose is not to "check off" the Big 5, but rather to learn about animal behavior and how it takes shape in the Kruger. After the very first day, we were already identifying animals at a quick glance that we hadn't even known about before we arrived. Neil encourages questions, and if he doesn't know the answer (unlikely), he seeks out more information. He has an impeccable memory, and a true gift for educating. Hearing Neil talk about the Kruger, it is easy to join him in his excitement.\r\n\r\nFinally, the trip would not have been so memorable without the social component. We enjoyed hearing countless entertaining stories and jokes, as well as the reflections about the history of, and general life in, South Africa. At the end, Neil even told us each which Kruger animal our behaviors most closely resembled based on his interactions with us during the experience. We would enthusiastically recommend Bearded Heron Safaris with no hesitations. We had an unforgettable experience, thanks to Neil and Tina.

What an incredible time!

Jackie and I had an incredible time with you in Kruger National Park just about a month ago now! I cannot thank you enough for all the time you spent with us, showing us around that magnificent place!  We were so fortunate in all the animals and the birds that we saw there in our 3 days with you. You are such an encyclopedia of knowledge about the animals and birds in Kruger, and probably in all of South Africa!  And, of course, we were able to discuss many worldly affairs between just the three of us which also made our time together very special.  Plus, lest I forget, the dinner you made for us was so delicious! I know that I ate more than my fair share! Mmmm, it was all so good. Thank you for that special evening, too.\r\n\r\nThank you again, Neil, for such a delightful and fascinating time in your home country of beautiful South Africa! I would come back in a minute!

Inspiring experience with Bearded Heron

I cannot praise Bearded Heron enough for the Safari they took us on this past September. From our first trip out in the truck until the last delicious meal that Alistair prepared for us, every day was an inspiring experience within Kruger. Neil's experience with and passion for the plants, animals and terrain we covered was at all times insightful and infectious. Any university would be lucky to have these guys teach a Hospitality 101 course. To be able to cater to groups of different personalities and make everyone feel comfortable and fulfilled in a place as unpredictable and wild as the Kruger is a rare feat that these guys have seemed to master with ease. I hope to be back soon and wouldn't change a thing!

I would tour with Bearded Heron again in a heartbeat

BHS was recommended to us by friends who had used them for their trip. Tina helped us not only with the Kruger safari, but also recommended someone for a private tour in Cape Town which was also great. We went in July, 2012, and spent 5 days at the Biyamiti camp. It was magical. Even with the bridge washed out, we were able to tour different spots, and Neil's ability to listen to the lions allowed us to intercept a mating pair. The night tour, and a walking tour were also highlights. Also, my adult son has a very limited diet, and every night Alistair made sure to have food available for him. We were 4 in a party of eight, and every night, sitting around outside in the camp, eating dinner, talking about what we had seen, was relaxing and delightful. I would tour with Bearded Heron again in a heartbeat.

Family trip a blast

Wow! What a wonderful trip. Our two sons (ages 11 and 8 at the time) had a blast. Three years later we are still talking about our adventures and wondering when we can go back. Neil and his team organized everything and geared it specifically to our interests. I highly recommend putting this trip on your bucket list.

Bearded Heron Safaris was extraordinary

My wife, our son and his girlfriend did a 5-day safari with Bearded Heron Safaris in September and it was truly great. I've read reviews of other safaris. Let me contrast. For as many years as Neil has been guiding safaris, he still manages to be as excited as we first timers were. His game drives are not limited to 3 hours in the morning (we typically were out for 5) and 3 hours in the afternoon. We always felt that Neil was responsive to our energy and attention levels and what we were interested in viewing. Neil is an excellent teacher who instructs about the interconnectedness of animal life, plant life, the weather, etc. We learned a lot as well as seeing some amazing sights. The whole experience was so much richer because of having a knowledgeable guide. Neil is also an excellent photographer who was generous in sharing tips with our son (Jake took over a thousand pictures).\r\n\r\nOur cottages at Bergendal and Lower Sabie were more than comfortable and very safe. Our breakfasts and dinners prepared by Alistair (delightful dry sense of humor) were delicious and plentiful. The cost of the safari was more than reasonable. All four of us agree that this was an extraordinary experience.
